My Top Performers
Will Grier, Davidson Day School, 2014- Although Grier wasn't very impressive in the indoor tests (Bench, Vertical, Weight), he made up for it once he stepped on the field. The young quarterback was a little nervous at first, but once he got comfortable he was very impressive. In position drills he showed off his quick release and strong arm, which separated him from the other quarterbacks in attendance. His best attribute is his deep ball. He consistently threw a great deep ball, which had receivers asking for his services. If Grier commits to weight training and adds strength, he could be the top quarterback in the state next year.
Elijah Hood, Charlotte Catholic, 2014- Hood looks like a D-1 running back, and he's only a sophomore. He wasn't one of the quickest guys in the position drills, but it didn't show in the one on ones. He ran good routes out of the backfield, and consistently beat opposing Linebackers. Hood will be one of the top players in the state next year.
Braxton Berrios, Leesville Road, 2014- Berrios came to the NC Elite 100 to prove a point, and his message was delivered. The 5'9 athlete continued to impress me by putting up 19 reps on the bench press testing (185lbs). Berrios was on a mission all day to prove he was one of the top players in the state. He didn't drop a pass all day, and consistently beat his defender. He's quick, strong, has great ball skills, and run great routes. The thing I like most about Berrios is his attitude. He plays with a chip on his shoulder, as if he has to prove himself each time he steps on the field. He left many people shaking their heads, and even earned the sleeper award, but confirmed my opinion that he's one of the best in the state.
Mike Sutton, Panther Creek, 2013- Sutton was the best offensive lineman at the combine. His strength is his biggest asset. He turned in 33 reps on the bench press, and pancaked many defenders in one on ones. There's no doubt he's a D-1 prospect, but still needs some polishing. I foresee him as a guard or center at the next level.
Tyquan Lewis, Tarboro, 2013- Lewis was very impressive in one on ones. He wasn't stopped a single time, no matter which offensive lineman was thrown at him. The MVP consistently beat the top offensive lineman in call-outs at the end of one on ones. Lewis is a bit undersized right now for a defensive end, but has the ability to stand up and play in the second level. If he adds weight he will be a tremendous pass rusher of the edge, but he already has the quickness to play outside linebacker. Lewis is a gifted athlete with an even better attitude.
Peter Kalambayi, Butler, 2013- Kalambayi is another gifted athlete that turned in an impressive performance at the VTO Elite 100. Kalambayi has great size and speed, which is why he has added 20 plus D-1 offers. He is a prototypical outside linebacker with the potential to be a hybrid depending on the defensive scheme. He needs to add some strength, but there is no doubt that Kalambayi is the top defensive player in the state.
Bryon Fields, Providence Day, 2013- Fields came to the VTO Elite 100 as an underdog, but walked away with an MVP trophy. The cover corner was very impressive in one on ones, showing the ability to play close to the line of scrimmage. He also showed off his ball skills and closing speed. He competed with a brace on his wrist, which I heard him say was recently broken. Fields brings a toughness and attitude to the field that gives him the ability to compete with some of the best.
