NCHSAA 4-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP--GAME TWO

MIDDLE CREEK CLINCHES?NCHSAA STATE 4-A BASEBALL TITLE

? ? ? ? ? ??DURHAM?-- Middle Creek jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and made it stand up as the?Mustangs rolled past Cornelius W.A. Hough 10-4 on?Saturday afternoon to clinch the?North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A baseball championship?series at the Durham Bulls?Athletic Park.

? ? ? ? ? ??Middle?Creek took the best of three series in two straight. Jimmy Boyd pitched a?one-hit shutout on Friday night as Middle Creek won the?opening game 2-0 in?just 91 minutes. Boyd, who was the designated hitter on Saturday, had one hit?in two official trips, walked twice, stole a base?and scored two runs in the second game, earning?the championship Most Valuable Player honor.

? ? ? ? ? ??Graham?Edwards earned his ninth pitching victory of the year, fanning five and walking?four. Spencer Venator, who was knocked out of the?game in the second, was the?loser.

? ? ? ? ? ??Hough?had cut it to 5-3 in the top of the third but Middle Creek added a pair of runs?in the bottom of the third and then scored three in the?fifth.

? ? ? ? ? ??The?Mustangs unleashed a nine-hit attack, led by Tyler Shorter's three hits, but?also took advantage of five walks issued by Hough pitching,?two hit batters and?six Husky errors.??David Salmon had?a single and a double and drove in two for Middle Creek.

? ? ? ? ? ??Will?Champion, A.J. Girting and Jared Sobo each had two hits for Hough. Girting?drove in two runs.

? ? ? ? ? ??Middle?Creek improved its overall record to 26-7. Hough, in only its second year of?operation, finished 23-12. Both teams were in the?NCHSAA baseball finals for?the first time.

NCHSAA 2-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP--GAME TWO

?WHITEVILLE BEATS RANDLEMAN 3-1 TO SWEEP 2-A BASEBALL SERIES



? ? ? ? ? ??ZEBULON-- Nathan Hood's run-scoring double broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and helped propel Whiteville to a 3-1 victory over Randleman on Saturday for a sweep of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A baseball championship series at Five County Stadium.

??????????? The Wolfpack won a pair of close games in the best of three series. In Friday night's opening game, Hyland Tyler went four for four and Jacob Long drove in all three runs for Whiteville as the Wolfpack edged Randleman 3-2.

??????????? Hood, who was named the Most Valuable Player in the series, gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead with his key hit, and the Pack added an insurance run in the seventh on a hit batsman, fielder's choice, stolen base and sacrifice fly. He also went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 and walking three while scattering six hits.

??????????? Hunter Smith, who had two hits and a pair of walks for Whiteville, drove home the game's first run with a single in the fourth, but Randleman tied it when Zach Bach drew a bases loaded walk in the following inning.

??????????? Will Albertson led Randleman with three hits, with a single in the third, double in the fifth and triple in the seventh, but the Tigers were unable to drive him home in the final frame.

??????????? Cody Trogdon was the losing pitcher.

??????????? Randleman, the defending state 2-A champions, finished 29-6 overall while Whiteville improved to 26-5 and ended the season with a 16-game winning streak. Whiteville was making its first appearance in the NCHSAA baseball finals since 1998 but has played for the title seven times previously, including in 1985 when these same two teams squared off for the title that was won by the Wolfpack in two straight.

WEDDINGTON TAKES?NCHSAA STATE 3-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

? ? ? ? ? ??ZEBULON?-- Jeremy Schellhorn drove in three runs and Alex Bostic hit a monster home run?to lead Weddington to a 4-2 victory over Pikeville Charles B. Aycock and the?state championship on Saturday in the second?game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A baseball?championship series at Five?County Stadium.

? ? ? ? ? ??The?Warriors, in their first NCHSAA baseball championship series, swept the series?in two close games.??Bostic got the?pitching victory on?Friday night as Weddington built up a 5-0 lead and then?held off a rally by the Golden Falcons to win the opener 5-3.

? ? ? ? ? ??Bostic?was named the Most Valuable Player of the series.

? ? ? ? ? ??In?the decisive game, Aycock took a 2-0 lead in the second, parlaying a single, a?walk, a fielder's choice, an error, a sacrifice fly and a wild?pitch into a?pair of runs. But Weddington came back in the top of the third to knot it at 2-2?on a two-run single by Schellhorn.

? ? ? ? ? ??Bostic?blasted a home run off the scoreboard to give his team a 3-2 lead in the fifth,?and then the Warriors added an insurance run with a two-out RBI-single by?Schellhorn in the seventh.

? ? ? ? ? ??Aycock,?just as it had in the Friday game, had lots of scoring opportunities but?stranded a whopping 15 runners in the game.

? ? ? ? ? ??Adam?Pate and Cameron Taylor each had two hits for the Golden Falcons. Sean Collins?was the winning pitcher, striking out three and?walking five, while Bryant?Stafford got the loss for the Golden Falcons.

? ? ? ? ? ??Weddington?finished 28-6 overall while Aycock fell to 21-11.

NCHSAA 1-A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP--GAME ONE

SOUTH STANLY ROLLS?PAST VOYAGER IN FIRST GAME IN 1-A BASEBALL

? ? ? ? ? ??DURHAM?-- South Stanly pitcher Russ Weiker pitched a no-hitter and the Rowdy Rebel?Bulls gave him plenty of support in a 13-0 victory?over Durham Voyager Academy on?Saturday in the opening game of the North Carolina High School Athletic?Association state 1-A baseball?championship series at the Durham Bulls Athletic?Park.

? ? ? ? ? ??The?game was halted after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule. The?opener had been rained out on Friday night.

? ? ? ? ? ??Weiker?struck out eight and walked three in picking up his 14th?win in 15?decisions.??Chad Sykes was the?losing pitcher.

? ? ? ? ? ??South?Stanly scored three in the first, keyed by a run-scoring single by Mykel Golden?and RBI doubles by Stephen Wallace and Grayson?Short. Then the Rowdy Rebel?Bulls blew it open with four runs in the third, with Weiker helping his own?cause in the frame with a two-run single,?and added six in the fourth.

? ? ? ? ? ??Short's?three-run homer was the big hit in the fourth for the Bulls.

? ? ? ? ? ??Wallace?had three hits in three trips for the winners while Short, Connor Ford and?Golden had two hits apiece. Ford had a pair of doubles and?two runs batted in.

? ? ? ? ? ??South?Stanly is 29-4, winning its 13th?straight game, and is in the state?finals for the third time in the last four years. Voyager has only?freshmen and?sophomores on the team at the relatively new school and is now 20-7.

? ? ? ? ? ??Game?two of the best-of-three is set for Saturday afternoon at five o'clock.
