October 20, 2012MOUNT AIRY - In the NCPreps.com Game of the Week, Mount Airy quarterback Austin Taylor threw three touchdown passes, two to Darius Gwyn, as the Bears secured at least a share of the Northwest 1A/2A conference title with a 35-13 win over visiting South Stokes last night.
Taylor's first touchdown pass came in the second quarter after South's Jacquan Dobson gave the Sauras an early 7-0 lead with a twenty-five yard run in the first quarter.
Also in the second, Mount Airy's Julian Rawley made probably the biggest defensive play of the game as he intercepted South quarterback J.J. Davis's flair pass intended for Dobson and returned it untouched twenty-nine yards for a score that gave the Bears the lead they would never lose.
The Bears put the game away in a :59 second span of the third quarter. First, Taylor would hit tight end Garrett Van Hoy with a one-yard scoring pass and then on the ensuing possession by South, a mix up on a hand off from Davis to Dobson would result in a fumble that Isiah King would recover for the Bears. On the very next play Taylor would hit a streaking Gwyn down the right sideline from 54 yards out and the Bears never looked back.
Martin would add a 17-yard run for a Saura score in the fourth and the Bears' Andrew Jones would end the scoring with 5:20 left in the game on a 1 yard run.
The Bears rolled up 316 yards of offense with Zaquan Dobson rushing for 121 yards on 22 carries. Taylor was 9 of 13 passing for 148 yards with Gwyn hauling in 5 passes for 96 yards. The Bears forced four South turnovers with Garrett Van Hoy picking off 2 of Davis's 3 interceptions. South's Martin rushed for 133 yards on 23 carries.
With the win the Bears secured the top 1A seed from the conference and can win the conference title outright with a win over East Surry next week
