Martin Joins 1000/1000 Club
This year has certainly been a season of "firsts" for the Thomas Jefferson Varsity Football program first win on the road, first consecutive game winning streak, first winning regular season and the Gryphon's first appearance in the NCHSAA 1A playoffs. Now it is time to add another "first" for the program as Mac Martin, the senior signal caller for Thomas Jefferson (Western Highlands 2A/1A Conference), has reached the very rare milestone of rushing and passing for over 1000 yards in a single season. Known as the "1000/1000 Club", it is a rare accomplishment for quarterbacks in the state of North Carolina and it appears that Martin may be the first to achieve this milestone at the NCHSAA 1A level.
Following the Hendersonville game, Martin has tallied 1055 yards rushing and 1384 yards passing so far this season. This includes 16 rushing touchdowns and another 9 touchdowns through the air. In addition, Martin is averaging an impressive 244 yards of total offense per game and plays a big role in the Gryphon's balanced offensive attack.
While some opponents may focus their game plan on containing Martin, they should also take notice of his impressive defensive statistics. As the starting safety for the Gryphons, Mac currently tied for the state lead in interceptions, with seven on the season, and is also one of the leading tacklers (63 total tackles) for the Gryphon's much improved defense.
With one remaining regular season game against 2A Owen (Black Mountain) and at least one game in the 1A playoffs, some are wondering if Martin can reach the 1500/1500 milestone. But don't expect Martin to get caught up in the attention. "I'm really not thinking about any stats right now", said Martin. "We just need to stay focused on each game and hopefully, we can make a good run in the playoffs."
