August 24, 2013MOUNT AIRY - In a battle of two of the state's top ranked 1A squads, visiting Starmount ranked 6th in the NCPreps.com poll defeated 9th ranked Mount Airy 23-13 in the opening game of the 2013 season.
The Rams (1-0) took advantage right off the opening kickoff as Mount Airy mishandled the ball and fumbled at the Bear 7. Two plays later, fullback Joe Walker scored the Rams' first points of the 2013 season with a 6-yard run. Nick Gunnell's extra point was no good.
After getting to the Bear 1-yard line, Coach Scott Johnson called upon Gunnell to kick a field goal. Gunnell calmly kicked a 22-yarder through the uprights to give the Rams a 9-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Rams had a couple of opportunities to increase their lead, but 2 fumbles in the red zone eliminated that. With 4:58 left until halftime, junior speedster John Johnson on his first carry of the year went 51-yards for another score. With Gunnell's extra point, the Rams led 16-0.
Mount Airy mounted a charge right before halftime as quarterback Logan Holder hit Julian Rawley with a 7-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion pass failed.
Starmount took a 16-6 lead heading into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Bears cut the Ram lead to 16-13 as Davontae Dobson raced 53-yards for a score. Mitchell Brown added the extra point.
With 9:39 left in the game, the Rams drove the field and basically put the game away when Will Simpson scored on a 5-yard run. Gunnell hit his second extra point of the night to give the Rams a 23-13 victory.
This was the 4th straight win over Mount Airy. Both teams will be on the road next week as the Rams travel to Pilot Mountain to face East Surry while Mount Airy faces Thomasville.
