Smelter looking for the best of both worlds

Macon native DeAndre Smelter has a tough decision to make. As a pitcher, Smelter is one of the best in the country and will probably be a top pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. On the football field, Smelter is a great safety who has the attention of many top schools across the country. Jacketsonline caught up with Smelter to find out what his plans are this summer and when he will make a decision about where he will possibly go to school.

How did your baseball season go?

It went very well. We are actually still playing right now in the semifinals.

What schools are recruiting you for Baseball?

Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Stanford, and that is all I can think of right now.

Tell me a little bit about your strengths as a pitcher. What do you do best on the mound?

My best pitch is my fastball. I topped out at 97 mph last and hit 98 this year. My secondary pitch is my splitter and I throw that for strikeouts. I also have a cutter that I am working on with my pitching coach Kevin Brown.

What is your relationship like with Coach Brown?

He has been helping me with everything especially with my mound presence. We have a pretty good relationship.

Do you talk to the Georgia Tech baseball coaches?

I talk to them from time to time. However, the last time I really got a chance to talk to them was at junior day.

Describe your thoughts on the Georgia Tech football program.

I really like Georgia Tech's football program as a whole. They have really great academics and that is something I really look at. Coach Charles Kelly is recruiting me at Safety and we have a great relationship.

Will you update your height and weight?

Currently I am sitting at six-foot-three, 213 pounds.

What is the most important thing you look for in a school?

First, I look for academics because after my career is over I want to be able to fall back on something. Good relationship with the coaching staff is also really important. I want to try to do both sports in college.

Do you have a time frame on a decision?

Right now, I do not even know. My mom and I will sit down and talk about it soon.

What are your plans for this summer?

I will be going to a bunch of baseball showcases in Minnesota and Orlando as of right now. I am probably going to play this summer with my school team. I am going to focus on baseball this summer. I am trying to get back to Georgia Tech but with my schedule this summer, it is going to be hard.

Do you have a top set of schools right now?

Yeah, it is probably Georgia, Georgia Tech, Auburn, and I like Stanford too.
