Cary Native Coached Two Prospective First Round NFL Draft Picks
Coleman Tyrance
Special to NCPreps

When National Football League (NFL) prospective first round draft picks Kevin Dodd (Clemson University) and Jarran Reed (University of Alabama/Goldsboro HS) step up to the lineup—or to the limelight—Cary native “Coach Tyrance” will have played a part in their success.

Coleman Tyrance is known as “Coach” or “Coach Tyrance” among athletes who range from 5-year-old tykes in training to successful college all stars. Tyrance, founder of Cary Coaching Precision, is a former defensive line coach/special teams coordinator for the post-graduate football program at Hargrave Military Academy, a preparatory school in Virginia. Tyrance coached both Dodd, a defensive end, and Reed, a defensive tackle, when the two of them—now prospective first round NFL draft picks—attended the school. Dodd and Reed are among 25 players to have been invited to Chicago for the NFL draft’s first round selection. “Each of these athletes demonstrated tremendous talent, and I’m proud to have worked so closely with them,” Tyrance said. “We still stay in touch, and I remain in their corner, pulling for them throughout the NFL draft selection process.”

The 2016 first round draft selections begin Thursday, April 28, and Tyrance plans to follow the outcomes closely. Tyrance was a varsity defensive line coach at Cardinal Gibbons High School for three years and helped lead the Crusaders to their first conference championship in 2009. Tyrance also was named Gibbons Head Junior Varsity Football Coach for the 2009 season. Tyrance has coached at Al Golden Football Camp, Temple University Football Camp, Team Europe vs. Team USA Bowl, Division III Football College Bowl, Offense Defense Elite Camp, Blue Chip Invitational Combine, First Steps Football Academy, and several other camps. Throughout his career, Tyrance has coached numerous athletes, including Defensive End Corey Crawford (Washington Redskins) and Defensive Tackle Ego Ferguson (Chicago Bears).

Tyrance’s passion for the game plays out on and off the field. Since 2008, Cary Coaching Precision’s athletes have participated in an annual football camp/food drive Tyrance holds to benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Since its inception, the event has generated more than 6,000 pounds of canned goods for the food bank and has drawn coaching participation from athletes who have played with the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants. Through Cary Coaching Precision, Tyrance trains the next generation of Kevin Dodds and Jarran Reeds.
