Chris' QB Corner: Colin Ellis (Ashe County)

Senior Colin Ellis of Ashe County High School came into the 2016 season as the catalyst of the Huskie potent offense. So far this season, Ellis has put up some big numbers heading into his team's bye week. Colin is one of the state's leading passers as he has completed 40 of 71 passes for 676 yards with 7 touchdowns. He is also a threat to run as he has over 200 yards rushing.

NCPreps.com's Chris Hemphill caught up with Ellis and he gave he thoughts on football and the 2016 season.


How has the season been going thus far?

“My team is 1-1 thus far in non-conference. In my first game against North Surry, I struggled some throwing the ball, but ended up with 175 passing yards and 1 TD. I also had 150 rushing yards and 1 TD. In our second game against 4a rival Watauga, I threw for 520 yards and 6 TDS. This far in the season I have done some good things, but I have things to improve on.”

How did it feel to have such a big game this past week?

“I was happy with how I played this past week. It really gave me confidence. I thought I made good decisions and did as much for the team as I could. I hate we couldn't come out with the win.”

What things did you work on in the off season? Do you think those things will help you achieve your personal goals and team goals?

“This summer I had several meetings with my QB coach in which I broke down film, worked on plays, and signal calling. I also attended camps at Lenoir Rhyne, Mars Hill, Tusculum, North Greenville, and USA Football. I believe my skills have improved and will also help me improve my team.”

How were your grades this past year?

“I made A’s and B’s last year. I am in Beta Club and my current GPA is 4.39.”

How much time do you spend working out with your receivers outside of school?

“During the summer, I got with some of the wide receivers at least a few hours a week. Now that practice has started every day, we don’t do much outside of practice except for watching film.”

How much time do you spend watching game film breaking down defenses?

“On Saturdays, I watch film from my past game. My QB coach writes notes and tips for me. During the week, I look at film of our upcoming opponent at least one night during the week.”

Who is currently recruiting you?

“No team is recruiting me.”

Do you have a dream school?

“UNC Chapel Hill.”

Which quarterback in the NFL would you say you model your game after?

“Drew Brees.”

What other sport are you good at outside of football?

“Basketball.”

What is your favorite movie?

“The Revenant.”

What is something people don't know about you as a person that is positive?

“I always show kindness.”

What is the longest touchdown you have thrown for?

“70 yards.”

Why should colleges recruit you?

“I am a leader and a competitor. I’m always working to improve my game.”

What makes you a leader?

“My willingness to push others, communication skills, and my decision-making. I believe every person plays a key role in a team. Every guy has to buy in and trust the system.”
