Did you know? – NCHSAA Basketball State Championship Games


Here are some interesting facts about the 2021 NCHSAA state basketball championships.


Boys

Millbrook one their first title in 98 years. They also won the last 3 playoff games in OT including the state championship game!

Ardrey Kell High School has had only one losing season in the past 14 seasons. After Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, halted basketball activities for several week due to Covid, AKHS went on a 7 game winning streak coming into the championship game.

Weddington High School is home to numerous state titles. But Saturday’s victory was the school’s first state championship in men’s basketball! Weddington also led the NCHSAA in 3pt shots made and did it on 40% shooting.

The Northwood Chargers ended the season as 3A NCHSAA runners-up; however, their three leading scorers are freshmen. They will be back!

Farmville Central High School earned their third state championship in a row. This game broke NCHSAA records for the most points scored by a single team (FCHS 113). And with Hendersonville scoring 98 points, the two teams broke the record for the most point scored in a championship game. FCHS’s Tequavion Smith (NCSU commit) ends his high school career with an overall record of 98-6.

With most of their conference opponents opting out of basketball season because of COVID, Wilson Prep only played four regular season games before the playoffs began. Another fun fact is that this second year program is coached by former Harlem GlobeTrotter lead man, Anthony Atkinson.

Lincoln Charter’s emotions were raw as they were playing for their beloved assistant coach Jamie Seitz who passed away in December from Covid. Coach Seitz’s son was also a member of the Lincoln Charter varsity men’s basketball team.


Girls

Murphy High School’s women’s state championship win came after four consecutive final fours and 126 wins in the past five seasons. This was also the program’s fourth state championship title. Torin Rogers and Sarah Pullium both scored 22 points for the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday.

Princeton High School’s coach, Paula Wooten, coached her last game Saturday. She had the honor of finishing her 35 year career by coaching her senior point guard and daughter, Meredith Wooten to an excellent year.

The Shelby Golden Lions won their first women’s state championship Saturday ending the season with a perfect 19-0 record. Shelby was lead by three underclassmen: Maraja Pass and sisters, Ally and Kate Hollifield.

Making their third straight championship appearance, Farmville Central High School’s women’s basketball team came into Saturday’s game with a winning margin of 42.9 points over opponents and scoring an average of 74.3 points per game. They finished the season 14-1.

Carson’s girls finished the 2020-21 season 19-0 and the program’s first state championship title. Carson went into the game with four players averaging double figures. Their senior class finished their careers with 96 wins.

Asheboro High School made school history by winning competing in the state championship game. Also senior forward, Diamond McDowell, finished her high school career averaging over 20 points and 11 rebounds per game. The Blue Comet’s coach, Don Corry, celebrated his 700th career victory back in January!

The Vance High girls’ win on Saturday will be the last basketball title under the Vance school name. The Cougars will become Chambers High School next season. The Cougars allowed just 42.8 points per game from their opponents this year on route to the state championship title.

Three years ago the Garner Magnet High School women’s basketball team only won two games. They finished this season undefeated (12-0) in conference play and an overall record of 17-1. Their trip to the state championship game was the first time battling for the title since 1978.
