Forty of the state’s top basketball seniors and 32 of the top women’s soccer seniors have accepted invitations to participate in the Oasis Shrine East – West All-Star Games in Greensboro in July.

The 56th men’s basketball and 30th women’s basketball all-star games will be played July 19 in the main arena of the Greensboro Coliseum (6:30 tipoff for the women’s game) and the 13th women’s soccer game will be played July 20 at UNCG Soccer Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff).

Six All-State players, four on the West team, will play in the men’s basketball game. First team All-State guard Josh King of Trinity High School, the AP State Player of the Year and an East Carolina signee, is among the featured performers. King scored 2,577 points this season to place him third on the NCHSAA all-time list, and he also set a state record for 3-pointers this season with 164, making him the state’s all-time leader in 3-pointers in a game and career.

King will be joined on the West team by Old Dominion signee Jason Thompson of Chatham Central High, Chris Gaynor of Mount Tabor High and a Winthrop University signee, and Joe Brice of Mooresville High.

First-team All-State selection and Virginia Commonwealth signee Jamal Shuler of Jacksonville High will lead the East team. He will be joined by All-State selection Kentwan Balmer of Weldon High.

Head coach Glenn McKoy of Whiteville High will lead the East team, and head coach Gary Bowne of St. Stephens will lead the West. The East won last year’s game and leads the series 28-27.

Three All-State players will compete in the women’s basketball game. Fayetteville Seventy-first High’s LaToya Pringle, the AP Player of the Year and a UNC Chapel Hill signee, will lead the East team. She will be joined by Laney High’s Tamera Young, a James Madison University signee, Karlyle Lim of East Chapel Hill High and a University of Pittsburgh signee, and Nicole Days of Pender High and a ECU signee.

Fellow All-State selections Ashton Barton of Rosman High and a UNC Ashville signee and Erin Crowder of Thomasville High will lead the West. Joining them will be Adrianne Bradshaw of High Point Central High and a Clemson signee, and Vatai Smith of Dudley High and a Georgia State University signee.

Head coach Tony Denning of Midway High will lead the East team, and head coach Tony Byrum of Monroe High will lead the West. The East won last year’s contest and leads the all-time series16-13.

Sixteen All-State selections, 6 Regional Players of the Year, and 1 State Player of the Year will play in the women’s soccer game. Broughton High standouts Gena Villari, a Furman University signee, and Elaine Kelley will lead the East team. They will be joined by Jami Dickerson of Roanoke Rapids High and a East Carolina signee, and Jessica Patterson of Jacksonville High and a UNC Greensboro signee.

The west team will be lead by Jenny Cauble of Grimsley High and a UNC Wilmington signee. She will be joined by Wake Forest signee Kristina Hanley of St. Stephens, UNC Chapel Hill signee Mary Charlotte Hinkle of RJ Reynolds High, and Virginia Tech signee Ashley Owens of Western Guilford High.

Colin McDavid of Scotland County High will coach the East team, and Marc Calderone of North Mecklenburg High will coach the West. The East won last year’s game to even the all-time series at 4-4-4.
