IN SEMIFINALS IN NCHSAA 3-A MEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
BURLINGTON - Top-seeded Daniel Greenberg of East Chapel Hill did not lose a game on Friday to advance to the semifinals in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Greenberg coasted into a Saturday morning semifinal against fourth-seeded Mason Schermerhorn of Southwest Guilford, who lost only one game in four sets in his two victories.
Second-seeded Andrew Crone of Hickory faces another East Chapel Hill Greenberg, Dan’s brother Mike, in the other semifinal. Mike battled George Kernodle of Burlington Williams in the quarterfinals, down a set and trailing 2-5 in the second. But Kernodle was affected by the heat, began to cramp and eventually could not continue, even though Greenberg and East Chapel Hill coach Lindsey Linker told their opponent to take all the time he needed to recover in an act of outstanding sportsmanship.
The 3-A tournament reflects the strong play in the Mideast Regional, as three of the four advancers in both singles and doubles come from that regional.
East Chapel Hill also placed its doubles duo of Robbie Paul and Jeff Archer into the semifinals. The Wildcat team will face the top-seeded team from Hickory, Rom Teague and Tripp Johnson, which lost only one game in their two straight-set victories on Friday.
Semifinals will be played Saturday morning starting at 9:00 a.m. with the championship slated for early afternoon.
