Freshman Orientation: Bishop Boswell

He did not play on all the big middle school circuits, he did not suit up for a big name travel ball program, so why am I so fired up about 6’4” 2024 Bishop Boswell of Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg High, well because despite all of this, he is one of the top prospects in his class, in the state.

South Mecklenburg is coming off a 13-12 season where they averaged 55.9 points per game with only one player, then junior Joseph Ferrante, averaging in double figures. Enter new South Mecklenburg Head Coach Gary Hall.

Boswell will suit up this season as Hall’s first starting point guard at South Mecklenburg High. As you may recognize his name, Gary Hall’s success up to this point had him slated to coach in the McDonald’s All-American game this year prior to the event being shut down by COVID.

“He has an outstanding skill set and high basketball IQ. More importantly he is extremely coachable.” Head Coach Gary Hall said about Boswell, “It is this rare combination of basketball skills and intangibles that make Bishop one of the top prospects in the class of 2024”

Already Boswell is carrying offers as Houston stepped forward with his first tender less than a month ago.

“I was extremely surprised to receive and offer this early, just felt very blessed,” Boswell said.

Boswell has spent October, and into November, getting settled into his role with his new high school team. With his play during some of these Fall Leagues, he has continued to open eyes because since his offer, people are seeking him out to watch when they may have missed him before.

“My main focus for fall ball is to get comfortable with this team and mesh together before our high school season starts,” Boswell said.

As for how Boswell views his game, “I don’t think I play like anyone,” he continued, “I try to add different things to my game, from different players. I try to emulate a lot of what Donovan Mitchell and Paul George specifically.”

Why I Like Boswell

He checks all the boxes with his size, skill set and maturity on the floor. After watching him play earlier this summer, an onlooker walked up to me and asked where Boswell was attending college next season. To hear he had not even stepped foot onto a high school court yet took them back.

Boswell is very confident with the ball in his hands. He understands what his team is trying to accomplish and how to get his teammates the ball where they are most comfortable. Boswell is a good rebounder and carries a quiet leadership about him on the floor. While he does not have blow by speed, he plays with a great pace, able to put a foot in the paint and make a read. He is also a confident shooter from deep. Wrap all this up in a 6’3”/6’4” wide shouldered frame and there is a lot to like moving forward.
