There is something about coming across a late bloomer, in fact identifying the sleeper is something that I have made my career on. Whether it be Jay Huff, Shakeel Moore, Nic Claxton, Kadin Shedrick, Jalyn McCreary or numerous others, there is an excitement about coming across a player, later in his high school career, with no offers with no one talking to or about them and promote that player at the appropriate level.

Mayar Wol is a junior at Fuquay-Varina High School. The 6’8” wing is averaging 15 points and six rebounds with a block and a steal per game. These numbers are supplemented by his 48 percent shooting from three and 57 percent shooting from the field. Before I go any further, I would like to reiterate the 6’8” part, the wing part, and the junior part.

“Mayar is a high-level scorer. He handles the ball well and gets to the rim with ease.” Wol’s High School Coach Carter Skathy continues, “He has a deadly mid-range game and is a good three point shooter.”

Wol has been a key cog for the six and two Bengals. His ability to line up across the line up, whether it be bringing the ball up and initiating the offense or playing from the high post, or creating from the wing, Wol’s confidence is starting to skyrocket.

“I am a calm and collected player when I play. I am very versatile and can score on all three levels. I am a good defender, who is able to guard any position on the floor and I try to not force anything, let the game come to me.”

Wol has been in the Fuquay Varina area most of his life and has been playing basketball (as well as soccer) since he was little. Of course, we say little meaning younger, Wol has always been taller than most of his peers.

However, living just outside of Raleigh, the capital of the Hoop State Ten minutes from NC State, 20 minutes from Chapel Hill and 25 minutes from Duke’s campuses, right smack in the middle of Tobacco Road, Wol has no schools talking with him. This does not get as deep as offers, they are not even calling about him yet (I do want to put an emphasis on the yet).

Wol is someone who will qualify academically. He has the size and the skill set. He also has the production.

“Mayar is a guy we can turn to when we need a bucket or a big rebound in clutch time. He is a huge factor in what we do,” Skathy said.

Going back to the beginning of this writing, there is an exhilarating feeling about coming across a talented student-athlete with no offers, that no schools have really heard of. From here, I am very eager to see where Wol’s recruitment goes.

Rivals Reaction

Wol is a lengthy 6’8” with the ability to run and jump very well. He is a 48% three-point shooter (!48%!) on the season with the ability to shoot it off the catch and the bounce. Wol is the classic late bloomer, the guy who has always been there but continued to develop and he kept getting better and better. There is no reason to believe that trend of improvement will not continue moving forward. Already producing, Wol’s best basketball is clearly ahead of him and his intrigue is one that could begin to garner interest from every level of D1 basketball, soon.
