NC High School Football Fan reaches Milestone
Deana King
NCPreps.com Publisher
Joe Myers is not a typical high school football fan. Most fans support their team and their team only, but not "Eagle Joe", his internet username on NCPreps.com. Myers, who lives just outside of Thomasville (N.C.) has recently done something incredible.

On November 4th, "Eagle Joe" attended the first round 4AA playoff game between Millbrook and Wake Forest-Rolesville. This game allowed this high school football enthusiast to be able to say that he has seen every NCHSAA member school in action on the gridiron. Yes…that is 372 high schools teams since 1988.

How long have you been going to high school football games?

"The first game was in 1988, after I graduated from East Davidson High. Southwest Guilford won that game over East by the score of 19-16. Between 1988-1992, I only attended 4 games total, but I really got started in 1993 when my cousin (who was like a little brother to me), got moved up to the varsity team at East Davidson. I started going to watch his games, then started going to watch playoff games, and finally the State Finals in Chapel Hill. I would go Friday night and drive back home, then go back and watch all 3 Saturday games. I wish it would have stayed like that. I really did not intend on seeing all the teams play until after 2003. At that time, I had seen 102 teams play. By then I had found a woman that would tolerate my "obsessive" as she would say, but I say "unique" hobby. In the years 2003-2011, I was able to see 267 teams play."

What strategy did you use when deciding on a game?

"My strategy was to go to a game every week that had 2 teams that I have never seen before. I would use the annual North Carolina Prep Football News Yearbook before the schedules were posted on the websites or even on the internet. I would use Arnold Solomon's (the founder of NCPreps.com and the state's first high school football rankings and prediction expert) ratings and later Brian Simmons (current NCPreps.com football analyst and founder of SimmonsRatings.com) to determine games with the closest margin of victory. I would later use the Massey's Ratings to give an indication of the most entertaining game with the closest margin."

What other factors helped you achieve this goal?

"One of my best tools was rainouts. The weather helped me out in achieving this goal. On some weeks, I could go watch a game on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday. One year, I saw Kannapolis beat Mooresville on a Tuesday. About 3 years ago, as the number of teams dwindled, I started an excel spreadsheet and listed all the teams I had not seen by classification and conference. I saved going to games with teams in the same conference since I knew those games would be available every year. I concentrated on eliminating conferences with an odd number of teams I had not seen whenever they played another team I had not seen out of conference. By using this method, I'm sure it saved me 2 or 3 years. Also, being a self-employed CPA in Greensboro (N.C.) allows me to get off early on Fridays to travel to games. I probably would not have been able to do this without the help of NCPreps.com."

What was the first game that you saw?

In 1988, I saw Southwest Guilford defeat East Davidson 19-16 at East Davidson High School.

What were some of the top games that you have seen?

1. Maiden 18 Thomasville 13 - 1993 3rd Round 2A Playoffs.
Thomasville scores go ahead TD with :14 seconds to go to take a 13-12 lead. After a squib kick return to the 43, the Maiden QB rolls out, avoids pressure and hurls a 57-yard pass, which is caught by the receiver as he falls into the end zone.

2. Bertie 38 HP Central 34 - 1995 3A Finals.
HP Central drives to the 1-yard line with less than 2 minutes to go. 4 Unsuccessful tries later, Bertie holds onto win. 5 running backs had over 100 yards rushing each in this game.

3. Graham 29 Swain County 26 3OT - 1999 3rd Round 1A Playoffs.
Both teams score touchdowns their first two OT possessions. Swain holds Graham to a field goal on its third OT possession. Graham recovers a Swain fumble on Swain's ensuing possession to win the game.

4. Thomasville 15 Wallace-Rose Hill 14 - 2004 1AA Championship Game.
Leading 14-9 close to one minute to go, backed up against their own goal line, Wallace runs the ball, while attempting to fight for the possible game clinching first down, Thomasville strips the ball and returns it for the shocking game winning touchdown.

5. Thomasville 19 Lincolnton 18 - 1996 1st Round 2A playoffs.
Lincolnton comes into the game facing the #1 team in the state, barely qualifying for the playoffs (won a draw for the 3rd seed from their conference), and with no kicker (injury). Lincolnton scores a late touchdown and is forced to go for 2 (missed two earlier attempts). Thomasville deflects the pass and holds on to win.

6. Independence 20 Richmond County 18 - 2003 4AA Semi-Finals.
Independence comes in ranked #4 USA Today and Richmond County #10. Joe Cox leads Independence to an early double-digit advantage. Richmond County changes to a more athletic quarterback in the 2nd half, mounts a rally, and gets in range for the game winning field goal from 30-40 yards out. The kick is wide as time expires.

7. Starmount 26 Albemarle 21 - 1996 3rd Round 2A playoffs.
Fresh off upsetting #1 Thomasville 7-0, Albemarle invaded Boonville. Back and forth game, however on 2 separate occasions, Starmount holds Albemarle on 1st and goals inside the ten with no points.

8. Albemarle 43 Thomasville 35 - 2001 2nd Round 1AA playoffs.
Seeking revenge for a heartbreaking 29-28 loss 2 weeks previously in which Thomasville comes back from a 21 point 2nd half deficit, Albemarle found itself trailing 34-19 in the second half. With a little trickery and a heavy dose of T. A. McLendon, Albemarle rallies for a 43-35 victory on its way to a state title. McLendon finished the game with 225 yards rushing and 5 TDs.

9. Albemarle 17 Thomasville 14 OT - 2003 Regular Season. Was he in or was he not? Depends on which side you sat on. After holding Albemarle to a field goal in overtime, Thomasville elects to go for the win on 4th and goal from the 5. The suspense ended when the referee marked the quarterback draw inches short of the goal line. Albemarle would go on to win its 3rd consecutive state title following this win. By the way, he was out.

10. Reidsville 31 Cummings 30 - 2002 Regular Season.
Both teams enter the game ranked in the top 10. Cummings takes a 30-24 lead with less than 2 minutes to go. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty results in a missed PAT. Reidsville methodically passes its way down the field and scores the tying touchdown with seconds to go. Seconds later, when the extra point goes through, Reidsville sends the home crowd home happy.

What was the worst game you saw (score-wise)?

Swain County beating Cherokee 66-0 at Cherokee in 2000.

Who has been some of the top players that you've seen play through the years?

Brad Hoover (Ledford), Madison Hedgecock (Ledford), Willie Parker (Clinton), Mohammed Massaquoi (Independence), Monterio Hardisty (New Bern), Jerome Simpson (Reidsville), Hakeem Nicks (Indepedence), Weslye Saunders (Durham Riverside), Brian Williams (SW Guilford), T.A. McLendon (Albemarle), Michael Waddell (Richmond County), Nick Maddox (A.L. Brown), and Tony Baker (Ragsdale).

In your opinion, where is the best place to watch a game?

"I've been to 207 different high school football stadiums. It's hard to just name one. For me it is a combination of looks, atmosphere, fan support, and food. Thomasville has a retro look, fan support, atmosphere, and a very good hot dog. Being a county whipping boy makes it difficult for me to go there often, but their tradition and program is undeniable. I also like going to Reidsville, Lincolnton, Maiden, Albemarle, Shelby, Crest, and Richmond County as well. Bandys has a unique set-up and looks as though it could be real intimidating with the crowd virtually on top of you. I enjoyed going to Clinton as well. Simeon Stadium is a great place also when the High Point schools are good, but I feel too far away. I prefer the atmosphere and community support of the 1A and 2A schools. The quality of football is better between 4A powers."

What is the funniest thing that you have ever seen happen at a game?

"I've seen streakers at 2 games. The first was between South Brunswick and North Brunswick at North Brunswick. Thankfully, the guy was headed away from me, but he ran across the end zone, up a hill, and climbed a 6-foot high chain length fence totally naked. North won the game 36-35. I can't remember the other game."

Any final thoughts?

"I graduated from East Davidson in 1988 and I was too small for football as I was 5'1 and 105 pounds at graduation. My wife believes that not being able to play as a high school kid is a big reason for my unique hobby. I want to thank her for being so understanding and occasionally dragging her all over creation to see a team that I had not seen. I also would like to thank Deana King (Publisher of NCPreps.com), Arnold Solomon, and NCPreps.com for helping me achieve my goal."
