North Carolina has been notoriously known for producing talent from small areas. Every year we see a star emerge from a small NC town and dominate at the collegiate level. Robeson County lays home to a big-time superstar in Purnell Swett (NC) wide receiver Chandler Brayboy. The 6'1 180-pounder from Pembroke, NC lives in a town with a population around 3,000 people. Needless to say, Chandler Brayboy is big fish in a small pond.
Brayboy got off to a promising start as freshman after he tallied 15 catches for 307 yards (20.4 YPC) and 3 touchdowns. He suffered a severe kidney injury that sidelined him for his entire sophomore campaign. A year later, Brayboy entered his junior year with a mindset geared towards complete domination of opposing defenders. Brayboy's game transcended to a new level as he finished with 90 catches for 1,147 yards and 11 touchdowns. Statistically, Chandler finished 13th overall in the state in receiving yards while leading his team to the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs for the first time since 2011.
Chandler Brayboy has a very fascinating skill set. He's 6'1 yet displays moves you'd expect to see from a 5'9 slot receiver. Brayboy elusiveness serves him well in one on one coverage as he gains separation with his long stride. He has an aggressive playing style that is unbeknownst to anyone simply relying on a scouting report. The team captain played several key roles for the Rams this season as he handled the return duties in conjunction with playing defensive back.
Chandler Brayboy is the classic diamond in the rough story. He is a three-sport star that excels in every one while maintaining a 3.8 unweighted GPA. Brayboy is a hard worker who thrives in the face of adversity and plays with an enormous chip on his shoulder. The summer combine circuit will be critical for Brayboy's exposure. Many are unaware of the talent that lays dormant in rural North Carolina areas. Undoubtingly, Chandler Brayboy will bring spectators and scouts to the small town of Pembroke, NC with an inevitably phenomenal senior campaign forthcoming in 2018.
