NCPreps.com Spotlight: Garrett Williams

The defensive back position is one of precision, concentration, and impeccable ball skills. All of which describes Hickory Ridge (NC) cornerback Garrett Williams consummately. The 6'0, 170-pound ball hawk was a matchup terror for opposing receivers and offensive coordinators alike this past season.

Willams displays a sharp focus when the ball is in the air. His long stride and rangy style of play allows for him to take the correct path needed to undercut a route at the last minute. He displayed his defensive prowess this past season as he posted 68 tackles, 3 interceptions, and nearly 20 pass deflections. On film, he has a disruptive first punch and quick feet to combat a double move given by the receiver.

"I’m coachable, self-confident, and lead by example. I have a desire to get better regardless of the circumstances. I am also a ruthless competitor on the field and in the classroom." Williams explained.

A ruthless competitor in the classroom is correct. Willams boasts an impressive 3.5 GPA while scoring a 1080 on the SAT and a 22 on the ACT.

Williams is an intelligent player on and off the field. His combination of athleticism and sharp instincts makes him an intriguing prospect to follow in the class of 2019.

NCPreps.com caught up with Williams and he spoke about his season and recruitment.

How did your season go?

"Our season overall went well, we finished with an overall record of 11-3 and lost in the third round of the 4A playoffs to Vance High School in our first season as a 4A football team. Individually this season was good but there are many things that I look forward to improving on next season. Accolades wise I received: SW4A All Conference 1st Team, Cabarrus County Defensive Dream Team, Charlotte Observer All-Region 1st Team Defense and was an All-State nominee."

What are your season stats?

"I recorded 68 total tackles (50 solo), 3 interceptions, 18 pass deflections, 1 fumble recovery, 1 sack and 2 defensive touchdowns. I also had 436 Kickoff return yards, 139 punt return yards and 2 touchdowns. "

What are your strengths on the field?

“My strengths on the field are off man coverage, awareness of situations, noticing wide receiver alignment and recognizing route concepts."

What other sports do you play?

"I played basketball the past 2 years but this year I am running track in the spring."

What schools are interested in you?

"I have offers from Appalachian State, Army, Coastal Carolina, and UNC-Charlotte and have received interest from UNC, Wake Forest, NC State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Penn State so far."

Who do you model your game after and why?

"I model my game after AJ Bouye from the Jacksonville Jaguars. He came to the NFL with no name and recognition and has worked to become one of the league’s best corners. He gets in the face of the league’s best wide receivers and shuts them down on a week to week basis along with Jalen Ramsey. What I admire about them is the chip on their shoulder when they play."
