NCPreps.com Spotlight: Kendall Winston
Kendall Winston of Nash Central HS (NC) is a lock-down corner with impeccable ball skills. Winston, who stands at 5'10, 170-pounds won virtually every match-up he was presented with this past season. He is an aggressive corner that plays his keys very well and delivers a forceful first punch when pressing a receiver.
The 1st team All-State selection grabbed 8 interceptions this past season while deflecting 12 passes. What Winston lacks in size, he makes up for with effort. Whether it's diving in the air to deflect a pass or coming down hill to lay a sure tackle on the ball carrier, Kendall Winston does it all. He quick instincts and nature football IQ puts him in the right place at the right time.
"I'm an aggressive and physical corner. I believe I will out work anybody you put in front of me," he told NCPreps.
Winston models his game after another play-making defensive back, who he says has a knack for being in the right place at the right time as well.
"I model my game after Tyrann Mathieu aka the “Honey Badger". No matter where you put him he’s going to make a play and it is second nature for him to make a play on the ball," Winston explained.
With his senior season looming, he is prepared to show programs across the nation that he is one of the top cornerbacks in the class of 2019.
How did your season go?
"The season was great I wish we could’ve went farther in the playoffs but I believe I had a good season. Next year will be even better for me."
What are your season stats?
"I had 54 tackles, 8 ints, 161 int return yards, 12 pass deflections, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 defensive touchdowns"
What are your career stats?
"I have made 102 tackles, 10 ints, 304 int return yards, 21 pass deflections, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 3 defensive touchdowns"
What are your strengths on the field?
“My ability to defend in pass coverage. I also do a great job with seeing plays develop."
What other sports do you play?
"I run track also."
