NCPreps.com Spotlight: Marqi Hathorn

Havelock (NC) linebacker Marqi Hathorn has a captivating story. One that exudes hard work and determination despite several adversities and trials thrown his way. The 5'11, 190-pound Hathorn amassed over 100 tackles this season as he helped lead the Havelock (NC) Rams to a spot in the NCHSAA 3A State Championship game. However, his story did not start out so triumphant.

"My freshman year l didn't make the football team because the coaching staff said I was too small. I worked extremely hard over the summer and made the team my 10th grade year but barely played. I was told by my coaches my junior year that I wouldn't be moved up to varsity and remained on JV my entire junior season." Hathorn explained.

Despite playing junior varsity as a junior, Hathorn continued to rely on his perseverance and work ethic to accomplish his goals. He had added a tremendous amount of muscle mass to his frame while preserving his 4.4 speed. The Rams' coaching staff began to take notice to the player who was once coined "too small" for the team.

"In the start of the season I was at defensive end but I didn't get much playing time so the coaches moved me to Outside linebacker and that is when everything changed. I was the leading tackler in our first game and made a name for myself thereafter."

With his high school career finished, Hathorn plans on continuing his hard work and aspirations of making it to the next level. Hathorn is aware that there may be more obstacles to overcome moving forward. However, he plans on handling things the same way he did in high school, one step at a time.

How is did your season go?

"My season ended better than expected. I had one setback that became my comeback, a dislocated shoulder and a Pectoral Muscle tear. However, I worked hard every day and it all paid off. To reach the state championship was nothing short of greatness! The opportunity that to play on the Duke's football field and on the big screen was the best feeling ever! I brought the best of me to the game and for the team!"

What are your season stats?

"I had 122 total tackles (8.7 per game), 60 solo tackles and 8 sacks. "

What are your strengths on the field?

My strengths on the field is my speed and my aggressiveness which works out well on the field. I am not afraid to make tackles nor get tackled."

What schools are interested in you?

"St. Andrews University, Southern Virginia University, and Methodist University."

Who do you model your game after and why?

"I never really compared myself to anyone, I never really thought about it; but I would say Reuben Foster because of his explosiveness and aggressiveness when making a tackle. I try to bring that same energy he brings when he’s on the field."
