On Saturday night, the Wayne Country Day Chargers got a huge win over the Trinity Academy Tigers to advance to the NCISAA 2A semi-finals. The Chargers driven by their high-octane offense won by a score of 84-78.
Wayne Country Day came in as the #3 seed and Trinity Academy as the #2 seed setting up for a great game. There was no shortage of high-level talent on the court with players like Jaden Cooper (WCDS), Noah Ross (TA), Mike Best (WCDS), Tyler Gill (TA), Vante Hutcherson (WCDS), Jakwon Moore (TA), and last but definitely not least Jordan Cooper (WCDS).
The game started with teams trading buckets with Trinity running their inside out game and Wayne Country Day letting their guards iso and get open looks. At the end of the 1Q Trinity Academy led 16-15. Jordan Cooper then made his game-changing mark in the second quarter.
Cooper, the younger brother of the starting PG Jaden Cooper (Columbia Signee) completely changed the game. He could not miss as he hit six 3’s in the game. In a post game interview he said “I came into the game just playing my role, the spot up shooter. The team gave me open looks and I knocked them down.” Wayne Country Day went on a 8-0 run to end the half to give them the 46-36 lead.
Coming out of halftime Trinity showed some fight with two buckets and eventually cutting the score to 4. Big shots from Sam Perez, Ross, and Gill kept the game close. The Chargers offense was too much and they hit their free throws at the end to seal the deal.
Wayne Country Day will take on the winner of The Burlington School vs Gaston Day or the winner of Northside Christian vs Westminster Catawba next week in the NCISAA Semi-Finals.
