Broughton High School is rich in basketball tradition, from the likes of Pete Maravich to Shavlik Randolph and more recently with Devonte Graham and Jerome Robinson, next level talent has been prevalent coming through the program.

Now, tasked with a young line up, two of the team’s top three scorers are sophomores, Head Coach Clarence Coleman is needing sophomore Will Otto, the next one in line, to step up and take the reigns as the leader of the team.

“My role with this team, as the one, is to distribute the ball around, but also be able to get my own buckets.” Otto continued, “Coach Coleman set me up for being a leader this year by giving me such a big role as a freshman. I am just taking it in stride and stepping into it.”

Otto has answered the call this season, as he is leading the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game.

“I am a good shooter and a good ball handler. Some of the guys say I play like, well a lot of the guys at Garner Road say I play like Jon Scheyer from Duke.”

This Summer was different for most, however Otto was able to still get in the gym and put in some work.

“I was trying to fix up some of the mechanics of my jump shot, trying to get it more consistent there and then I will always continue to work on my ball handling, keep it tight.”

With Broughton’s rich basketball tradition, Otto understands what the goals of the program are. Now that he is the leader and the one everyone is looking at, he knows what he has to do.

“I definitely want to make a push for the state playoffs. We are in the middle of the pack right now for the Cap-7, so help my team win some games and make a run.”

Rivals Reaction

Otto has an advanced skill set and IQ for the game. While still on the slender side, only a sophomore, he is a legit 6’2” with good length. Otto is a good 3-point shooter and he takes care of the ball, while being tasked as the primary ball handler. The issue is never forced with Otto as he plays at a great pace and gets the ball into its spots. Great foundational base of a skill set here and it seems he is continuing to grow, a bright future for a player who is already seeing success at a young age.
