Beach Ball Classic: Day 4 Storylines

Here are some of the top storylines from Day 4 of the Beach Ball Classic being held in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Greensboro Day Gets it Done on the Perimeter

Coming into this matchup with Spring Hill, FL/Bishop McLaughlin Catholic, not many around the Myrtle Beach Convention Center were giving Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day a chance in this 2nd round matchup.

However, Greensboro Day made shots. They finished this one shooting 47% from three and making 18-25 free throws on the day. They also limited turnovers with only eight and equaled Bishop McLaughlin in the rebound margin, 31 a piece.

Greensboro Day was led by their three headed wing monster of sophomore Jaydon Young, junior Michael Zanoni and senior Tyler Lundblade. Young went for 12 points in the second half, en route to a team high 18. Lundblade finished 6-12 from the field with five rebounds and 17 points. Zanoni was 4-7 from three and 4-4 from the free throw line.

Greensboro Day advances to the third round of the event where they face 21st ranked Alpharetta, Ga/Milton High on Wednesday night at 7PM.

Bewley Twins Take the Title

Matt and Ryan Bewley came into the event with lofty expectations. Both of the twins, out of Orlando,FL/West Oaks Academy came in as 5-stars with multiple high major offers, playing for a Top 25 ranked team. They certainly left the event living up to all that expectation, and possibly more.

Matt was named the Tournament MVP as the sophomore was one of the youngest ever to win this award in its 40 years. Matt averaged 15.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.3 blocks per game shooting 53% from the field.

Ryan, also made his name shooting 61.6% from the field with 8.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Also, senior Wesley Cardet and AJ Neal both showcased their talents in leading West Oaks to the championship.

Breakout Event for AJ Smith

For the event, Smith averaged 17 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2 steals per game, while shooting 49% from the field and 60% from three. Combine finished 2-1 in the event with an appearance in the championship game, and a narrow four-point loss to Top 20 ranked West Oaks Academy.

Smith carries offers from the likes of Texas A&M, Elon and Charlotte, his role on this Combine team is starting to take shape and his confidence is soaring. I am sure many are eagerly awaiting to see him carrying this momentum into 2021.

Allow me to Introduce Myself

People around the basketball community may already know the name Derik Queen, but for the common basketball fan, the 6’8” freshman from Baltimore, MD/St Frances is someone they should become familiar with. Queen already has multiple offers from the likes of LSU, Georgetown, Virginia Tech and others. Standing 6’8”, Queen has a sturdy frame with poise, skill and ball skills.
