PITTSBORO - On Saturday night Northwood High School faced off against Chapel Hill High School in a NCHSAA matchup. By using great team defense and ball movement, Northwood captured the 57-43 win.
Northwood jumped out to a 12-0 led behind the play of their two dynamic freshmen, Jarin Stevenson and Drake Powell. The Chargers are a relatively young team, but they showed great maturity playing within their system and as a team.
In the first half the Chargers shot well from behind the three-point line as Colby Burleson (2021), Aidan Mclandsborough (2021), and Frederico Whitaker (2024) were all effective.
Chapel Hill was playing in their first game of the season and struggled early. They turned the ball over and had some bad offensive fouls. Despite those struggles, the Tigers played hard the whole game.
Coming out of the half, Chapel Hill finally found their stride as they went on a 16-2 run. The Tigers took advantage of Northwood’s inexperience and forced turnovers.
The Tigers were led by junior Jake Chislom, who showed great basketball IQ and was relentless all night on defense.
With one minute left in the third quarter, Chapel Hill took advantage of a technical on Northwood to cut it to a 2 point game.
After the run by Chapel Hill, Northwood re-gathered and became more patient on offense and put more pressure on the ball. A couple big threes by the Chargers extended the lead at the end of the game. Northwood came out with their 3rd win of the season.
Last night was a great battle between two teams that played team basketball. Two future stars in Stevenson and Powell showed why people should all keep our eye on them as some of the top players in the Class of 2024.
Powell led the Chargers (3-1) with 16 points.
